2021 Dunbar Fellowship

I was fortunate to be selected for the 2021 Dunbar Fellowship and have spent my summer working on this Augmented Reality project. The purpose of my project was to explore how some CMC students turned to creative outlets during the pandemic in a new dimensional way using digital art and Augmented Reality. In the time of confinement and isolation, artistic expression through art, music, dance, etc. could be both cathartic and healing. For me personally, expression through different artistic mediums has been one of the most positive aspects of my pandemic journey.

For this project, I spoke to several students who had also turned to art forms such as cosplay, fashion, photography, and more as a form of escapism and happiness. I interviewed these individuals and creatied a collective, virtual AR exhibit demonstrating how these students, including myself, have practiced creativity as an outlet and coping mechanism during one of the most intense periods of our lives so far.

This AR exhibit was achieved through interviews, photo and video media, animation, the app Artivive and other creative ways of capturing these narratives. Not only is documenting creative expression during this time extremely necessary, it also projects into the future to see how these creations can manifest further and evolve as a result of the pandemic.

Huge thank you to the incredibly talented and creative minds of Alex Albrecht, Isabelle Jia, Tomi Oyedeji-Olaniyan, Lateshia Peters, and Spencer Taylor without which this project would not be possible.

HOW TO VIEW MY PROJECT

1.

First things first, to access the Augmented Reality portion of my project, you MUST download the app ARTIVIVE to your phone.

It should look like this!

Or scan this QR code with your phone's camera and it will redirect you to the app store:

2.

Select an individual to view. Each person will have a black and white photo and a colorful circle directly behind them.

Open the Artivive app and hold your device so you can see the entire circle and image. Hold, and it should detect it, pulling up the AR piece.

Loading AR screen should look like this!

3.

Have fun playing around with these AR pieces and learning about the creative journeys of these following individuals.
